Acute (Short-Term)
Community inpatient services are designed as short-term admissions for diagnostic, evaluation and stabilization of psychiatric illnesses. Admissions are either voluntary or involuntary (doctors' certificates). Consumers do not need to get pre-authorization in emergency situations, however the hospital will need to arrange for authorization before admission to the facility.

Acute, Intermediate and Longer Term
Maryland Mental Hygiene Administration facilities, our State psychiatric hospitals, offer acute inpatient care for uninsured consumers and longer-stay inpatient treatment needed for stabilization beyond what the community services can provide. Admission into a State facility is considered when the individual has demonstrated that community resources and supports (natural and formal) have been exhausted and are not sufficient to maintain stabilization, and the individual's needs exceed community resources.
All admissions, except court orders, to State psychiatric hospitals should be accessed by calling Central Admissions at 1-888-MD-ADMIT.
