Ø    State Health Department (DHMH) indicates that some vaccine will be available through its website by 30 September.  DHMH will, within the next few days, send the Provider Agreement and an Initial Ordering Form to the contact person listed in the online application.  The Provider Agreement will be an online document with an icon to be clicked on to signify agreement/acceptance.  The Initial Ordering Form will request the number of doses desired and in what formulations.

Ø    DHMH will use VACMAN to send the order into McKesson, the CDC’s contracted vaccine distributor.  McKesson will ship requested vaccine to individual provider offices on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.  Expect a turnaround time of about 5 – 7 days.

Ø    Some providers will receive their vaccine from the State Depot via UPS

·       Mass Vaccinators: CCHD has now received approximately 129 completed applications for temporary State employment at CCHD from nurses interested in serving as mass vaccinators.  CCHD is close to designating locations and dates for the initial mass vaccination centers, subject to the availability and amount of vaccine received.

·       Vaccine Safety:  It appears that at this time the H1N1 vaccine is as safe as the seasonal flu vaccine.

·       Childrens’ Dosages:  Recent clinical trials at the University of Maryland’s Center for Vaccine Development (sponsored and reported by the National Institutes of Health) indicate that children from 6 months to 9 years of age will probably require two H1N1 immunizations.  These same trials show that children 10 to 17 have a sufficient immune response to warrant just one shot.

CURRENT PUBLIC HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A CARROLL COUNTY RESPONSE:

The mass vaccination centers sponsored by CCHD will now vaccinate Carroll Countians in two phases:

·       Phase I (first priority)

q       Pregnant women

q       People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age

q       Health care and public safety personnel who were not vaccinated at their own agencies or by Carroll County Paramedics

q       Persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years

q       People from ages 25 through 64 years who are at higher risk because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

·       Phase II (last priority)

q       Everyone else
